Whales & Mammals

Whales and marine mammals are some of the most fascinating creatures that inhabit our oceans, and a privilege to encounter.
Ranging from the colossal blue whale—reaching lengths of up to 30 metres—to the travelling humpback whale, which completes the longest mammal migration on Earth. From the ocean’s apex predator, the orca, who pass knowledge and skills down through generations, to intelligent dolphins that exhibit self-awareness. Then there are seals and sea lions, renowned for their curiosity and spectacular acrobatic displays.

“they experience strong social connections to the point where we consider their relationships, culture”

These sentient beings experience strong social connections—to the point where we consider their relationships a form of culture. With extensive parental care, traditions, established hierarchies, and documented instances of marine mammals experiencing emotions such as grief and loss, their depth of feeling is undeniable. Add to this their sophisticated communication skills, including clicks, whistles, and even song.

Marine mammals demonstrate complex behaviours that hint at their high level of awareness—including cooperative hunting strategies, problem-solving skills, and even tool use. I believe we are yet to fully understand just how deep their connections truly run.

Currently working as an underwater photographer onboard whale shark tour operator Ningaloo Discovery, I am privileged to encounter marine mammal species often. Some of the images featured below were captured on tour and wouldn’t have been possible without the Ningaloo Discovery team.
